The wait
In the early 1960s, the Musgueira Norte neighborhood began to emerge in the northern part of Lisbon.
To respond to the countless needs of the population, Father José Manuel Rocha e Melo, helped by a group of volunteers, founded the Musgueira Social Center.
The 'Centro' quickly became the heart of the neighbourhood, with services ranging from kindergarten to home care for the elderly. The Musgueira neighbourhood grew as a temporary area, but it was only almost 40 years later that the City Council came to propose rehousing the population. Alta de Lisboa was born.
Demolitions began in the late 1990s. The last stall disappeared in 2001. The Center was left until the end.
But the wait was longer than expected. For 12 years, the Center was isolated from the neighborhood by vacant lots and construction sites.
The new building began construction in 2011 and the transfer was made two years later, when the Center celebrated 50 years of existence.
