free transit
A book does not just contain a story, the characters or the dramas that the writer imagined. A book is a passport to a thousand journeys, one for each person who reads it, for each reader who wants to delve into the letters, words, sentences and paragraphs that encode the ideas and lend them to the world.
The 5L Festival invited photographer Tiago Figueiredo, a name known for his documentary work with a strong humanist slant, to walk the streets of Lisbon in search of readers. He will talk to people, find out what inspires them to read, what worlds they yearn for, and what discoveries they make.
“free transit“is an artistic intervention in the public space of Lisbon, composed of 20 portraits, which challenges reflection on reading as a boarding pass to an immaterial dimension. Reading, as free passage to other worlds, other ways of thinking, other lives or realities. 20 portraits, of 20 people, with 20 books and 20 confidences about the motivations for the act of reading, displayed at bus stops, metro carriages, cafés and pastry shops.
Included in the Lisbon 5L programme, it is on display in metro carriages (180 posters) between 22 April and 6 May, and on billboards spread throughout the city (60 billboards) from 27 April to 10 May.
THE Lisbon 5L – International Festival of Literature and Portuguese Language – is an initiative of the Lisbon City Council and Lisbon Municipal Libraries, with Artistic Direction by José Pinho (Ler Devagar).
